Born on August 1, 1962 in Amguri, District Sibasagar, Assam, Dr. Borthakur received his early education at Auniatia Hemchandra Dev Higher Secondary School, Amguri. He completed his Higher Secondary education at Govt. Boys' H.S. & M. P. School, Jorhat. Dr. Borthakur pursued his collegiate education at Science College (Now Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology), Jorhat where he obtained B. Sc. (Hons) Degree in Mathematics. He obtained M.Sc. Degree in Mathematics (Applied) in 1986 from Gauhati University, Guwahati and earned Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science and Application (PGDCA) from BDPS, Mumbai.
Joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, Duliajn College, Assam on August 1, 1987 conducted research in Computational Fluid Mechanics, earning an M.Phil. Degree in Fluid Mechanics from Dibrugarh University, Assam in 1999. Awarded Ph.D. degree by Dibrugarh University in 2008 for his research on "Studies on the effects of Variable Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity on some Heat and Mass Transfer of Micropolar fluid."
Dr. Borthakur served as an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Head of the Department of Computer Science at Duliajan College for three years. Joined as the Principal of Doom Dooma College on January 17, 2012, and served in this positionuntil his retirement on August 31, accumulating over 35 years of service.
Life member of the Indian Society for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ISTAM), Assam Science Society and Assam Academy of Mathematics Dr. Borthakur actively involved in the National Children's Science Congress (NCSC) to promote science among children. Vice-President of the State Organising Committee of Bharat Jan Vigyan Jatha (BJVJ) Dr. Borthakur was also the Executive member of the Assam Science Society for two terms. Dr. Borthakur presented a good number of research papers in national and international conferences and published in journal and proceedings. Dr. Borthakur edited, and published several books. His Doctoral Thesis "Variable Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity on Micropolar Fluid – A Computer Oriented Numerical Approach" was published by VDM Publishing House, Germany.
During his tenure as the Principal of Doom Dooma College he served as member of various bodies under Dibrugarh University such as Sports Board, College Development Council, Academic Planning Committee, Examination Board etc.
As a Vice Chancellor nominee of Dibrugarh University, Dr. Borthakur continues to contribute the higher education governance by serving on the Governing Bodies of Sadiya College, Namrup College and Digboi College.
Currently Dr. Borthakur is serving as the Registrar of Auniati University.
